Spontaneous flow instabilities of active polar fluids in three dimensions

چکیده
Active liquid crystals exhibit spontaneous flow when sufficient active stress is generated by internal molecular mechanisms. This also referred to as Fr\'{e}edericksz transition. We show this transition in three dimensions and study its dependence on the boundary conditions. Using nonlinear numerical solutions linear perturbation analysis, we find an out-of-plane under extensile for perpendicular polarity anchoring at boundary, whereas parallel permits both in-plane contractile wrinkling stress.

Spontaneous flow transition in active polar gels
– We study theoretically the effects of confinement on active polar gels such as the actin network of eukaryotic cells. Using generalized hydrodynamics equations derived for active gels, we predict, in the case of quasi one-dimensional geometry, a spontaneous flow transition from a homogeneously polarized immobile state for small thicknesses, to a perturbed flowing state for larger thicknesses....
متن کاملActive Contours in Three Dimensions
iv " Ready comprehension is often a knee-jerk response and the most dangerous form of understanding. It blinks an opaque screen over your ability to learn. Be warned. Understand nothing. All comprehension is temporary. " [8] v ABSTRACT To find a shape in an image, a technique called snakes or active contours can be used. An active contour is a curve that moves towards the sought-for shape in a ...
متن کاملInstabilities of a pressure-driven flow of magnetorheological fluids
In this work, we studied a pressure-driven flow of a magnetorheological suspension through a cylindrical tube in the presence of a non-uniform magnetic field perpendicular to the tube and varying along its axis. The flow was realized with the help of a commercial capillary rheometer in a controlled-velocity mode. Experimental pressure-flow rate curves exhibited a local minimum, and flow instabi...
متن کاملSurfactant micelles: model systems for flow instabilities of complex fluids.
Complex fluids such as emulsions, colloidal gels, polymer or surfactant solutions are all characterized by the existence of a "microstructure" which may couple to an external flow on time scales that are easily probed in experiments. Such a coupling between flow and microstructure usually leads to instabilities under relatively weak shear flows that correspond to vanishingly small Reynolds numb...
متن کاملNeutrino signature of supernova hydrodynamical instabilities in three dimensions.
The first full-scale three-dimensional core-collapse supernova (SN) simulations with sophisticated neutrino transport show pronounced effects of the standing accretion shock instability (SASI) for two high-mass progenitors (20 and 27 M([Symbol: see text])). In a low-mass progenitor (11.2 M([Symbol: see text])), large-scale convection is the dominant nonradial hydrodynamic instability in the pos...
